The effect of properties of sediment type on the relationship between suspended sediment concentration and radiance

A laboratory experiment was designed to determine the spectral characteristics of different types of sediment suspended in water in the visible and near infrared wavelengths (0.45-0.9 /xm) using a fourchannel radiometer. Field collected sediments were resuspended in water to produce different concentration levels for the measurement of radiance. Spectral measurements of turbid water showed a distinctive difference in the behaviour of radiance with change in the inorganic suspended sediment concentration and type. It was noted that the correlation between the suspended sediment concentration and the radiance varied with the mineral composition of the sediment. The clay minerals of low specific gravity had larger values of radiance than those from high specific gravity nonclay minerals. Based on the results obtained, it appears that an algorithm to estimate suspended sediment concentration can be developed from radiance. Les effets des propriétés de différents types de sédiments sur la relation entre concentration et radiance Résumé Une expérience de laboratoire a été menée afin de déterminer les caractéristiques spectrales dans le visible et le proche infrarouge (0.45-0.9 fim) de différents types de sédiments en suspension dans l'eau grâce à l'utilisation d'un radiomètre à quatre canaux. Les sédiments recueillis sur le terrain ont été remis en suspension selon différentes concentrations dont la radiance a été mesurée. Les mesures réalisées sur les eaux turbides ont montré un comportement significativement différent de la radiance selon la nature et la concentration des matières en suspension inorganiques. Il a pu être noté que la corrélation entre la concentration des matières en suspension et la radiance dépendait de la composition minéralogique du sédiment. Les minéraux argileux de faible masse spécifique présentent une radiance plus importante que les minéraux non-argileux de forte masse spécifique. A partir des résultats obtenus, il apparaît qu'il est possible de définir un algorithme permettant d'estimer la concentration des matières en suspension à partir de la radiance.
